Disease Management in HCBS: COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a significant and growing public health problem. More than 14 million people in the United States are living with COPD, it is the fourth leading cause of death and disability, and is projected to rank fifth in the burden of disease worldwide by 2020. Assessing, planning and monitoring the health and welfare of persons living with COPD is central to effective service delivery by today’s human service professional. Ethics in HCBS: You Don't Have To Shout!

Much of what is commonly believed about older adults is rooted in ageism and stereotyping. Describing an older woman as a “sweet little old lady” for example, may seem complimentary or kind, but it inspires images of frailty and dependence rather that visions of a person with a rich history and full life. It also implies that all women are sweet and little.

Too often, stereotypical and ageist beliefs lead to comments and behaviors that are offensive to an older person. With Baby Boomers ready to flood the market, professionals in all fields can benefit from a better understanding of the aging process. Contact us to schedule a training....

This Ain't Your Mama's Ethics Course

Research shows that when people are supported to direct their own lives, outcomes improve. Yet in most traditional service planning systems the “team” is heavily weighted with professional views in terms of both people and power. Professionals are considered the experts and the expectation is that their recommendations will be followed. This often means that people who have a very limited relationship with the consumer are making decisions that may have an enormous impact on the consumer’s life. Person-centered planning shifts the balance of power to the consumer and his or her natural supports. The focus is on discovering what people want out of life and supporting their power to choose life conditions and experiences that make sense to them. Learn how to:

  • Identify the terminology and concepts related to personcentered planning
  • Describe the relationship between social change movements and the development of person-centered planning concepts
  • Describe the differences between service planning and quality of life planning
  • Practice person-centered planning facilitations with tools developed by Patty Cotton at the Institute on Disability
