Grantsmanship is an art as well as a science. Core competencies required to successfully obtain grant funds include:
- Communicating an idea in a clear, attractive, persuasive, convincing way
- In-depth knowledge of the subject
- Access to a network of interdisciplinary colleagues
- Ability to define problems and propose feasible solutions and methods
- Perseverance
LTCA has demonstrated its grantsmanship skills by obtaining over $2.5 million in grant funds over the past decade. LTCA has successfully administered each of the grants it has written. While grant writing requires one set of core competencies, grant administration requires a completely different set of competencies such as:
- Monitoring compliance with government regulations, agreement terms, conditions and sponsor policies
- Participating in design, development and implementation of systems
- Establishing policies and procedures
- Developing and delivering training programs
- Applying federal cost accounting standards
- Achieving outcomes identified in the grant proposal
